Celluloid Friend
04:38
|
|||
See you sitting on a bar stool
See you dancing in the middle of a crowded room.
Talking about the stranger things you've seen,
As I watch your astral frame on the cinema screen.
But I know it's not your fault.
It's something in the way you move.
And it's not the end, my perfect celluloid friend,
I'm coming back to take you home.
And I didn't think this through,
Didn't take the time to think about you.
And I don't even know your name, just took
Everything I could.
Walking away with no smile on your face, you know
You've been treated wrong.
Driving around, going place to place, should have
Known it all along.
And so it goes [x4]
So it goes.
About time you went away,
You've said everything you have to say.
And now I leave this sacred place, to re-
Turn another day.
Standing in line before the closing time,
To get a chance to see you dance;
Climbing the stairs with all my hopes and my cares,
With no hope for small romance.
And so it goes...

Out Of Sight
04:40
|
|||
Wait another day, I'll see you tomorrow,
Try and find a way to pass the time.
Looking at the world outside my window,
A gentle flow of song and rhyme.
I don't mind the stormy weather,
The traffic pouring through the street.
A time to reassess what's broken,
A time to get up off my feet.
Sitting by the phone when we agreed on,
Your calls are over much too soon.
Now, I'm a trusting man, but girl, you lead on;
I wonder where you've been this afternoon.
I'm afraid to voice my feelings,
'Cause if I'm wrong, then we are through.
So I will wait for you to call me,
I will wait to hear from you.
Cologne on your new shirt,
Some wine spilt on your skirt.
I know it's just guessing, but
Can't you see I'm hurt?
You're working late at night,
Come home at morning light.
My heart's slowly breaking
When you're out of sight.
[Instrumental]
I see you standing there before me,
You see the damage that you've done.
You never thought this day would meet you,
It's over now, you've had your fun.
Cologne on your new shirt,
Some wine spilt on your skirt.
I know it's just guessing, but
Can't you see I'm hurt?
You're working late at night,
Come home at morning light.
My heart's slowly breaking
When you're out of sight.
My heart's slowly breaking
When you're out of sight.

The End Of The World
04:32
|
|||
I see the rain outside,
Feeling cold, tonight.
I hear the car doors slam;
People here don't give a damn.
The wind blows rain in my eye,
There's noone here for me to meet.
A couple trying to get dry
On the other side of the street.
I'm walking slow without a care in the world,
'Cause everything's going right.
I'd better call my wife and tell her why
I won't be seeing her tonight.
Oh no.
Oh no.
A broken beam of light,
A songbird calls, just out of sight.
Ancient leaves washed away,
Just like the troubles of the day.
A hazy world of blue,
For me and you.
Gotta see the rains through,
Nothing much I can do.
The water falls like it's the end of the world,
But I'm still a-OK.
I want to take off and walk these streets,
Until the end of my days.
Oh no.
Oh no.

So sick of love songs,
That melt in your heart.
So sick of trying to say that
We're not apart.
Mild aggravation,
And stained paper plates.
This love is just wasting,
We tried much too late.
I remember days of anguish,
The nights we tried to work this out.
I remember awful language,
The lines of black we screamed out loud.
You know that I loved you,
You know that it's true.
But falling out of love is just too
Easy (a thing) to do.
Got no more to ask you,
You've got nothing to say.
Takes two to dance the blues, and we've
Danced it all away.
Seen you walking down the hallway,
Counted all the tears you cried.
We said this love would last for always,
Never thought this love would die.
[Solo with Bb pattern]
[Piano solo with Gm pattern]
I remember days of anguish,
The nights we tried to work this out.
I remember awful language,
The lines of black we screamed out loud.
Seen you walking down the hallway,
Counted all the tears you cried.
We said this love would last for always,
Never thought this love would die.

The Valley
04:59
|
|||
Tell me all about your silent questions,
The images of life you fail to lose.
Talk about the long and rambling lessons,
The heartless anguish placed in front of you.
I've been down to beggar's end within a
Minute of exertion; I've been
Stripped apart by vagabonds with
Gloves made out of gold. I have
Walked across the valley with a
Donkey on my back, and I can
Tell a thousand stories that should
Never have been told.
Images and photographs of madness,
Lines of black and white, depicting grey.
What your eyes have seen, no-one could fathom,
What you can recall, no-one could say. I have
Seen a row of palisades de-
Fending empty spaces; I have
Witnessed refugees campaign for
Rights they've always had. I have
Seen the towns of concrete turn in-
To a sea of snow, and I have
Seen into the blackened souls of
All the nation's glad.
Resonate with life's emphatic madness,
The tinkering of bells and measured weights.
The litany of lives you have encountered,
Obituary passages await.
I'll recite the speeches made from mounts of
Manufactured diamonds, I'll re-
Late the frenzied feeding of a
Thousand hungry birds. I can
Tell a story resolute and
Free from tailors' hands, but they run
Few and far between, and they have
Apathetic words.
What about the men who walked beside you,
The ones you passed on roads of blackened glass.
The faces you have coloured in your libraries,
The memories of people that don't last? I have
Met a thousand socialites with
Blood upon their dresses, I have
Knelt with sullen faces in the
Shadow of the flag. I have
Studied with a poet, but I
Never saw his face, and I have
Met a thousand children living
Out of plastic bags.
Tell me where your path leads from this moment;
The journey that awaits beyond my door.
Imagine all the roads you may encounter,
The choices you can make, or else ignore. I will
See the face of tyranny with
Holes within its pockets, I will
Cast my piece of gravel with the
Millions I can't see. I will
Watch as boundaries fall, and new ones
Spring up in their wake, and I will
Reminisce on times I never
Witnessed, when we're free.
I will
Stand without a hesitation,
Free from selfish doubts, and I will
Point my finger proudly at the
Ones we've singled out. I will
Ride the waves of emerald wastes, be-
Reft of shallow waters, and I
Challenge all who hear me to ex-
Plain what it's about.

I Can't Lose
04:54
|
|||
Articulating with my hands behind my head, a silver
Tongue and words unsung left by the silent and the dead. Disguised by
Witches with black heels and callous films on silver reels, I lose my
Breath, I speak my mind, but it don't matter.
It don't matter.
'Cause I've got time, the words still rhyme, I don't mind
Taking one more shot. I told the
Truth, I raised the roof, and now I've
Given all I've got. I took my
Stand and raised my hand, I wrote my
Name, I played the game. Pullin'
Through, staying true,
I can't lose.
Oh no.
Propelled by words of quiet angst and minor grief, in rooms of
Aging words of learning that are older than belief. Beset by
Tyrants on the hill and chased by sirens just for thrills, I tell a
Story based on lies, but it don't matter.
It don't matter.
[Chorus]
[Solo]
At night I travel to the town of neon lights, and blindly
Walking on my injured feet towards the fabled sight. A friendly
Grin, a touch of skin to ease my passing into sin, or just some
Way to end this endless day of articles and gin. We're gonna
Burn down this building and collect all the flowers and lower this place to its grave, lest we be-
Come everything that they warned us about with the way they always behave. I face the
Solemn hand of justice, broken down and stripped for parts, but still I
Crack a smile and stay a while 'cause it don't matter.
Yeah, it don't matter.
[Chorus]
[Repeat to fade]

Our Favourite Song
04:24
|
|||
See you watching from afar,
But I don't know why
You don't listen very long,
Any more,
Any more.
Sit and play our favourite song,
You used to sing and dance along,
But your chair sits empty,
Leaves me wondering
Where you've gone,
Where you've gone.
And you don't have to say,
I've seen it in your eyes,
You're going away.
And I can only pray
That you'll be back again someday.
'Cause I can't wait too long,
To play our favourite song.
Filled with nothing but regret,
And empty faces.
And a space reserved for two,
Just for two,
Me and you.
And now the light begins to fade,
And you've been gone so many days.
What can I do, what can I say?
Just disarray,
Disarray,
Disarray.
And you don't have to say,
I've seen it in your eyes,
You're going away.
And I can only pray
That you'll be back again someday.
'Cause I can't wait too long,
To play our favourite song.
'Cause I can't wait too long,
To play our favourite song.

Not you or me knows why we came here,
We both know this is not the place.
Still, the evening's so wonderful,
The pale light on your face, makes me feel
Good. It makes me feel
Right; yes it does.
We had a minor redirection,
A walk from the path that we had planned. Now we're
Lost without a hope of rescue, but I'm the
Happiest man in all the land, because you're by my
Side. Yeah, 'cause you're by my
Side.
And you can
Talk about your latest revolution, you can
Preach about the task we face. You can
Suggest some kind of perfect solution, you can
Save the whole human race.
But just remember that
You've already saved one. Yes you have, you've
Rescued this wayward son. And while your
Mission's just started, it's barely begun, just know that
You've already saved one.
[Instrumental]

A Girl Like You
05:00
|
|||
Never spent a day, wishing I could
Fly myself away, 'cause everything
Seemed OK. But
Now I'm not so sure, thanks to the
Very special way, you always seem to
Know just what to say, and all else just
Tends to fade, when you
Leave my side, a heavy price to pay.
Don't know what to do,
Just to get through to you, my love.
I don't know what to say,
To point you my way.
[Chorus]
And now my life has room for two,
I'm head over heels,
Now I know how it feels,
To be with you. You know it's true,
And I will fall down at your feet;
For all my time, I could
Stand there in line,
And I'd never meet
A girl like you.
Standing on the stair, summer winds still
Blowing in your hair, smiling with-
Out a care; and
Telling me about your time in
Places far away, your time spent in Pe-
Ruvian cafes, the magical
Things you say. My
Heart in charge, I simply must obey.
An easy thing to do, to
Fall in love with you, my dear.
No cares in the world, if
You're my girl.
[Chorus]
[Bridge]
And I will sing from mountains high,
As long as you are by my side.
We'll go to places far away,
I'll stand beside you day by day.
No matter where, no matter how,
I'll be right here, if you allow.
Feeling like there's nothing I can't do,
If I'm with you.

A Song For Two
02:01
|
|||
Whispers in the night,
A soft exchange, but still you
Somehow see the light.
You try and gauge it all, but
Senses seem to fail;
You're lost within the gale of her
Persona, her mild
Aroma. You're lost within her
Eyes. You kiss her deep,
Between the words and
Shuddering sighs. You
Pull her close and run your
Fingers through her hair; you
Pull back and stare at your
Baby, your darling
Lady.
You whisper in her ear.
I've been meaning to say
That you make it all OK.
Tonight's forever if you
Say you feel the same. I can't attest
To being the best, but still you
Smiled when I confessed.
Perhaps it's real,
The perfect deal.
We're pulling through,
A song for two,
For me and you.

Ain't It Bliss
07:46
|
|||
The post office, they've been hard up on your case,
The dollar you gave didn't get so far.
Beneath those endless sheets you have displaced,
Thanks to all the payments on that car.
And the beauty Queen on Bond Street throws her soiree,
After handing out free tickets to the show.
You realise that she missed your invitation,
For reasons you already know.
Walking through the backdoor,
Of a designer zoo.
And dancing on the borders of a
National tattoo.
A fashion phase you're forgetting,
A ride that you have missed.
A testament to your landslide;
Ain't it bliss?
You've asked the police and the security guards,
They look away in faint surprise.
"Since when did all the commeners get so demanding?
Why don't they respond to all these lies?"
You inflate your minor grievances and hardships,
As though the locusts are bearing down.
You find that all your talk is so useless in comparison,
To all the ticking bombs in town.
Open signs inverted,
Cobbles on the street.
Justice been diverted,
Rambling on its feet.
Potholes on the landscape,
Logic gone amiss.
Forgot to paint the boardwalk;
Ain't it bliss?
Now your landlord seeks to redesign your values,
Tries to advertise your body to the world.
All your neighbours want to lend their blank opinions,
As you babble softly, like a little girl.
The TV is conspiring with the taxman's daughter;
Both are trying to bring you down.
As you watch as all the numbers get much smaller,
Perhaps it's time to get way, way out of town.
Gravel in the driveway,
Pebbles in your shoe.
Driving drunk on the highway,
Learning something new.
Redirect your madness,
Towards a dark abyss.
Find yourself all empty;
Ain't it bliss?
There's a master playing on the radio;
Everyone has stopped to hear his word.
You take your chance and pick their pockets,
Blow the coop, like a mockingbird.
The senators and congressmen from other countries,
Take the stage and dance away.
The papers are all full of stories,
Of how the foreigners pass their day.
The West upon the tabloids,
The East within our hearts.
Grab a bowl of popcorn, babe,
The show's about to start.
Watching feigned celebrity,
An interracial kiss.
Ratings and awards shows;
Ain't it bliss?
As your ship sails into bleak, oppressive waters,
But the shop insists that all is duty-free.
And you pick out a keepsake for your parents,
And fighting off your verbal dysentary.
When the captain tries to affect your cultured person,
By persuading all your friends to swim ashore.
You react as if you know it couldn't worsen,
And throw aside your tentative rapport.
Foam along the headlands,
Waiting for the tide.
Roaming through the deadlands,
Time to catch your ride.
Bring your man, and children,
To the place you've missed.
Time to win them back for good;
Ain't it bliss?
In the shadow of the mighty pleasure fortress,
You stand around in fancy dress.
A glance into the eyes of all the conquered;
You decide a drink is probably best.
No matter the hopes you may have harboured,
The lengths you've gone to see them through.
Al the end of the night, your drunken labours,
Have all done nothing good for you.
Links to old TV shows,
Minor detainees.
Find the man who still knows,
Where to pay the fees.
Lights of coloured splendour,
Clouds of icy mist.
Your conscience on a bender;
Ain't it bliss?

Whiskey and Dirt
04:30
|
|||
A line of smoke, and coloured hair, and you in-
Hale that pale elixir, with that thousand yard stare.
Processed into exile, just an automatic girl; walking
Into smoky bar-rooms in this alcoholic world.
Told her daddy she'd be home by ten, but now it's almost three; but the
Moonlight is for dancing, and this is where she wants to be.
Looking in your eyes, as she tells you how she feels; hear the
Stories of the drugs and sex and all the cash she steals. To her
Mother she's a cultured girl, to her father she's a star. But on the
Dancefloor she's a rebel, taking midnight way too far.
St. Mary's Street immersed with all the zombies from before; She
Takes you down the Metros way, you know she just wants more.
The smoke machine's alive, and she disturbs the clouds of mist.
A tiny smile upon her face.
The tears fall down, but you can't tell if she's alright;
This place does things to you, and you know you've got all night,
As you move
[Chorus]
Close to hold her tight, as your heart's
Beating like a drum. And she
Whispers in your ear that, baby,
You're the only one. Her
Hands are running down your shirt, her
Hips are dancing in her skirt. In
Technicolor evenings, of
Whiskey and dirt.
Broken bottles on the floor,
A fight has started up outside the door; And
No-one's on the dancefloor, except
You and your fine girl.
The music starts to grow and grow, it's
Filling up your soul, so you move
[Chorus]

Painted Grass
03:37
|
|||
No-one speaks English in this rat-infested town no more,
But that's really not my problem,
There's nothing I can do or say, to make things change my way. From
Junction Road to Camden town, new faces gather all around,
Articulating flights of fancy; they're tired of waiting, they wanna start dancing.
And we can do it all tonight.
Clouds are forming in your eyes, no buses or taxis can move these lies, you
Calculate a mellow fact and walk it down a lonesome track. Don't
Reminisce on what you've lost, don't tally up the awful cost; just
Take those seven steps up to the Heath. We'll lay be-
Neath the stars on Halloween, we're all around and in between, and
Nothing really matters any more.
[Instrumental]
On avenues of painted grass, come run with me in shoes of glass, while
People weave a silent path in concrete jungles, tainted math, dis-
Tracted by the startled sounds of bitter memories all around, we'll
Travel Underground into the square. And when we
Get there, we're blinded by all the lights, no time to sing, no time to fight,
You stumble through the dark into my arms.
It's all gone quiet. So we
Take our leave.
